Crime Prevention - Alley Gating

What is alley gating?

Although alleys can be useful shortcuts for residents and other legitimate users, they are often used for non-legitimate reasons. They sometimes provide an unobserved area for people to conduct illegal business such as spraying graffiti, drug dealing, robbery and occasionally burglary.

To help reduce this type of crime and improve the security of your property and that of your neighbours, you may be able to install special gates (often referred to as alley gates) to prevent access to alleyways and footpaths.

Are alley gates viable for your area?

Talk to your neighbours first of all to see if they are interested in setting up a scheme and, if there is sufficient interest, contact the Borough's Community Safety Team.  Community Safety will advise you on the viability of your proposal and, if appropriate, the next steps.  The Council's Alley gating Policy can be viewed below.

Approval for alley gates

If the scheme goes forward for approval, the majority of the process is covered by the Alley Gating Policy.  Final approval is made via an alley gating panel with the proposal being heard in public.
