The Royal Borough manages around 1,862,500 sq m/ 186 hectares of parks and open spaces. The Parks team aim to achieve Green Flag status for six of their parks by 2010. Green Flag recognises quality and rewards the best green spaces in the country. Key criteria which the spaces are judged on include: welcoming space, health, safety and security, cleanliness and maintenance, sustainability, conservation and heritage, community involvement, marketing and management.
Mobile gardening teams regularly visit sites to ensure that
the defined standards are maintained within parks. The gardening
staff ensure that the quality and range of horticultural features such as grass
and litter collection, flower and shrub beds, hedges, playgrounds and outdoor
sports facilities are all maintained appropriately and that standards of
cleanliness and health and safety are achieved by regular inspection.
