Alan Wand, retired soldier and resident of Blandford House, Ashcroft Road, Maidenhead, is once again flying the flag following the presentation of a new Union flag by the Royal Borough's Community Safety Partnership.
Mr Wand's flag was unfortunately stolen last year and the replacement was presented to him and his fellow residents on Thursday 4 August by Local Police Area Commander Supt Tim De Meyer.
Supt De Meyer said: "The police, the Royal Borough and our network of neighbourhood volunteers are keen to demonstrate our commitment to serve older members of our community. This presentation is a token of our support and respect for senior citizens.
"Our teams of neighbourhood police officers and Royal Borough community wardens are keen to hear if there are any safety and security concerns relating to older people in our community. We can provide practical advice and support on matters such as home security and personal safety. We are very proud of our Safe as Houses scheme, which has improved the security of more than a thousand homes of older people. We have a lot of expertise in this area, which we are keen to share for the benefit of residents."
Cllr Phill Bicknell, Cabinet Member with responsibility for community safety, said: "We are totally committed to reducing crime and disorder in the borough and I was delighted to hear about this initiative as it demonstrates that people are at the heart of everything we do."
Sherry Mills, Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator for Ashcroft Road, said: "I was very excited and happy to be part of something that demonstrates concern for older people. It may seem a small thing to some, but having the flag stolen meant a lot to Alan, who served his country loyally and enjoyed showing his allegiance and celebrating special days in our calendar. A big thank you to all for caring and making this possible."
Mr Wand said: "It was a fantastic day and brilliant to be presented with this flag. It means so much that people took time out of their busy days to come and see us. The flag is an important part of the community and it brings it together!
"I was surprised and really happy when I was told about it. Thank you to everyone concerned for making it happen."
