A seventh Green Flag park for Royal Borough

Grenfell Park in Maidenhead has become the seventh Royal Borough park to be awarded a Green Flag.

It joins the current six - Braywick, Desborough, Kidwells and Oaken Grove parks in Maidenhead and Clewer Memorial Recreation Ground and Home Park in Windsor - which have held on to their status as being among the cleanest, greenest, safest open areas in the country.

The recipients were announced today (Tuesday) and the new flags will be hoisted this week in the run-up to Love Parks Week (Saturday 21 to Sunday 29 July).

Cllr Simon Dudley, cabinet member for adult and community services, said: "Grenfell Park is one of our many success stories, having undergone major improvements over the last few years. These include opening up the views, the addition of a fountain, play equipment and a cannon and the formation of an active user group whose members undertake minor works.

"We have an outstanding collection of parks and open spaces in the Royal Borough which are popular and offer a great range of attractions for all ages. However we are continually striving for the best possible experience for residents and visitors and the Green Flag programme has helped us focus our efforts."

This year a record 1,424 parks and green spaces countrywide received the coveted award - presented for high standards in a range of areas including overall park management, safety, cleanliness and maintenance, sustainability, conservation and community involvement - up from 1,136 last year.

Alexandra Gardens/The Goswells in Windsor, which was also submitted for consideration but did not succeed, will be re-submitted next year with judges' recommendations taken on board.
