Still time to apply for sports bursaries

There's just over a week to go for talented local youngsters to meet the deadline for applications for this year's Royal Borough sports bursaries.

Budding young sportsmen and women and their coaches have until Thursday 11 August to register their applications for the latest round of the coveted bursary awards.

Sports bursaries of up to £250 are available to young people and their coaches involved in a wide range of sports to help them with training costs in their bid for local, national and international recognition in their sport.

The coach bursary award scheme aims to acknowledge the vital contribution coaches make to sport and help towards coaching courses, purchase of equipment and clothing, and travelling expenses.

Nominations are also invited for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to sport in the borough over a number of years.

Cllr Simon Dudley, Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Services, said: "Anyone thinking of applying for a sports bursary really does need to submit their application in the next few days to meet next week's deadline.

"We fully appreciate the huge commitment demonstrated by a great many of our young people as they strive to progress in their chosen sport. Hopefully these bursary awards can go some way to providing the vital support they need to follow their sporting dreams and fulfil their sporting ambitions."
