A popular Windsor footpath has re-opened this week following its closure on health and safety grounds during a redevelopment project in the town centre.
Peascod Place - which links Peascod Street with Windsor's central library and Bachelors Acre - had been closed since September during the redevelopment of the site at 29-30 Peascod Street.
The well-used shortcut was re-opened to pedestrians on Monday (25 July) while work continues on the refurbishment of the site behind its distinctive historic façade.
The refurbishment has included the demolition and reconstruction of the rear extension which runs along Peascod Place. Two retail units on the ground floor are now complete, but work is still under way on the residential units overhead.
The council worked with contractors The Westbeach Group to minimise the length of time the footpath had to remain closed while essential demolition work was carried out.
Cllr George Bathurst, Chairman of Windsor and Eton Town Partnership, said this week: "When the footpath was closed at the beginning of this project there were some concerns about its temporary closure from people who use it regularly to get from Peascod Street to the library and Bachelors Acre.
"Naturally we appreciated those concerns and did our utmost to reassure people that the decision was taken with the safety of residents and passage users very firmly in mind.
"I am delighted that the footpath has now been re-opened and we can now look forward to the completion of the work on the site which is sure to enhance the appearance of that part of Peascod Street for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors to the town."
Following requests from the council the contractors will be constructing a small protective archway above the footpath to allow it to continue in use for the remainder of the redevelopment.
