The Royal Borough is continuing to promote responsible dog ownership by supporting National Poop Scoop Week 2011 which runs from Monday 25 to Sunday 31 July.
Throughout the week community wardens will be out and about reminding people to clear up after their dog and to 'Bag it, Tie it, Bin it'. They will hand out leaflets outlining the law and how to report irresponsible dog owners.
The week will also be used as an opportunity to raise awareness that dogs, if not controlled, can frighten horses and their riders as well as other members of the public.
Cllr Phill Bicknell, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Environment, said: "I am delighted that the council is supporting National Poop Scoop Week.
"As a dog owner, I am all too well aware that dogs can be quite intimidating, especially the larger ones.
"Some people are afraid of dogs and if they encounter a boisterous or uncontrolled dog this may be distressing. Please be considerate of those around you if walking with your dog off the lead.
"Community wardens and police officers will continue to work together to ensure that residents can enjoy our many outdoor spaces without being scared by dogs. We will also tackle owners who do not clear up after their pets.
"This week is not a one-off. We will work throughout the year to raise awareness and I would like to thank all the responsible dog owners who are already doing their bit to make the borough cleaner and safer."
Sgt Rob Dalton, Neighbourhood Sergeant, said: "We have worked very well with our colleagues from the Royal Borough to try and tackle these issues. We encourage residents to be respectful towards others. Dogs do need to be off the lead for exercise, but it's how we deal with mishaps and dog disagreements that make us good dog owners."
