Windsor and Eton relief road's new name is: Royal Windsor Way

The new name for the A332 Windsor and Eton relief road is Royal Windsor Way.

The name - which was selected by members of Windsor Town Forum from a wide range of residents' suggestions - was announced by the Mayor, Cllr Colin Rayner, at a special reception in the Guildhall this morning.

It was a poignant moment for Cllr Rayner as he was cabinet member for highways during the extensive improvements to the road.

Guests included residents who independently suggested the winning name, pupils from Dedworth Middle School whose suggestions were shortlisted, current cabinet member for highways, transport and environment Cllr Phill Bicknell, representatives of Windsor Town Forum and members of the project team.

A sign will now be installed at each of the five entrances to the relief road:
• Clarence Road roundabout
• M4 junction
• two slip roads at the junction with Maidenhead Road
• junction with the Eton spur road.

The official unveiling of one of the signs, by the Mayor, takes place early in July - in time for the torch relay and the Olympic and Paralympic events at Dorney Lake. It is hoped an 'Olympic host authority' sign will be unveiled at the same time, although this is dependent on receiving the necessary permission from the Olympics organisers.

Cllr Rayner said: "For over 40 years the stretch of the A332 between the M4 and the Clarence Road roundabout has been known simply as the relief road.

"After the road works we carried out extensive landscaping including an avenue of plane trees on this major gateway to Windsor. With the Jubilee, Olympics and Paralympics - and one year on from the completion of the works - this summer was the ideal time to finally give it a proper name."
