The Royal Borough is launching its first Volunteering Awards at a Volunteers' Day on Thursday 28 June to recognise the outstanding contribution that individuals or groups make to council projects and the local community.
Residents are urged to nominate in the following seven categories:
• Adopt-a-Street - (schools, businesses, community and individual)
• community project
• community safety - (individual and group)
• libraries
• museum
• school governor
• young volunteer.
Cllr David Burbage, council leader, said: "The Royal Borough's Volunteering Awards give us the opportunity to say a public thank you to the many exceptional people who volunteer across a range of disciplines and will ensure that the often unsung heroes and heroines get recognised.
"These awards reaffirm the council's commitment to the Big Society and the key role played by our residents.
"I am delighted to launch the inaugural awards which I am sure will inspire our residents and I look forward to reviewing the nominations."
Cllr Andrew Jenner, deputy mayor, said: "I want to reiterate what Cllr Burbage has said. Volunteers are the backbone of our community and make such a difference.
"I am honoured to jointly launch the awards and I urge you to send in your nominations."
