Royal Borough community wardens given new powers to tackle dog fouling

The Royal Borough's zero tolerance to litter policy has been reinforced with community wardens given the powers to tackle dog fouling.

Community wardens can now issue fixed penalty notices to anyone whom they see allowing a dog to foul and failing to promptly remove the mess. Anyone who refuses to pay the fine (currently £50) can be prosecuted and may face a court appearance with a maximum penalty of £1,000.

Wardens will also hand out leaflets outlining the law and how to report irresponsible dog owners, and posters have been put up in borough parks to remind people to 'Bag it, Tie it, Bin it'. Walkers will also be offered free bags to dispose of their pet's waste.

This latest drive to rid the borough of dog mess follows last year's successful pilot run in conjunction with the Boyn Hill, Cox Green and Woodlands Park Neighbourhood Action Group.

Cllr Phill Bicknell, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Environment, said: "We know the vast majority of dog owners are responsible - with a small minority giving them a bad name. But we are not prepared to tolerate those who do not obey the law and we will not hesitate to use our powers to impose an on-the-spot fine of £50.

"The Council is committed to extending the community wardens' powers and issuing fixed penalty notices for dog fouling is a natural extension. We will work tirelessly to ensure we catch the culprits.

"It is not all about enforcement however, which is why we have produced posters and leaflets to educate people."

Incidents of dog fouling should be reported to the Council's streetcare team on 01628 683800 or via streetcare@rbwm.gov.uk
