Cabinet to look at taking forward Stafferton Way relief road

Detailed background work on the long-proposed completion of the Stafferton Way/southern relief road in Maidenhead looks set to be carried out if cabinet gives approval next week (Thursday 24 May).

The road, which would open up Stafferton Way to Oldfield/Bray Road, is strongly supported in the now adopted Maidenhead Area Action Plan - the blueprint for the regeneration of Maidenhead.

Cllr Phill Bicknell, cabinet member for highways, transport and environment, said: "As we move forward with bringing new life to Maidenhead we need to take a careful look at traffic flows and helping residents and visitors get about with the least possible delays.

"The area action plan recognises that although the completion of the relief road isn't essential at the moment it will be important to provide additional road capacity when the Maidenhead development opportunity areas come to fruition. That's why we need to plan ahead and, by doing some detailed work at this stage, we can be ready to take the scheme forward at the most appropriate time to benefit Maidenhead's planned shopping, housing and business developments."

Cllr Bicknell stressed that any proposal for the road would be subject to planning permission which would include full public consultation.

If it goes ahead, the completed relief road would improve transport links around the southern part of Maidenhead and take a significant amount of traffic away from Braywick Road/Kings Road (at the station), Frascati Way and the Castle Hill roundabout.

The road - which the area action plan says is likely to cost in the region of £2.5m - could be funded through a variety of sources including developers' contributions and bids for government funding.

Cabinet is being asked to give the go-ahead for detailed work at this stage and a further report will be presented to members in the autumn. If it gets final approval it could be open by autumn 2014.
