Clarence Road roundabout works - progress update

The works programme for the resurfacing of the Clarence Road roundabout is progressing well, allowing the council to revise closures for the coming weekend and aid traffic flow for the first fully open weekend of Legoland's 2011 season.

The resurfacing and associated work - the final major part of the Windsor and Eton relief road project (WERR) - started last Friday night (25 March) and major road closures will be completed by Monday 4 April, with minor closures at night ending Thursday (7 April), weather permitting.

Measures over the weekend include:
• Friday 1 April - From 8pm the roundabout will be completely closed so that surfacing works can continue. The roundabout will remain closed until work is completed early Saturday morning
• Saturday 2 April - throughout the day there will be partial closures of Clarence Road East and West and Goslar Way northbound. The relief road both ways, Imperial Road and Goslar Way southbound will remain open. Clarence Road roundabout will close at 9pm and remain closed until Sunday morning
• Sunday 3 April - traffic will be able to run north/south on the relief road, through the roundabout and along Imperial Road as last week. In addition, Goslar Way southbound will remain open
• Monday 4 April to Thursday 7 April - at night there will be local lane closures on the approaches to the roundabout to allow for resurfacing of the traffic islands. On Monday the roundabout lane closures will only be put in place after the Windsor Racecourse traffic has cleared.

Diversions will be in place as required. Subject to works progress and weather conditions there may be some nights when the planned works may change at short notice.

Contractors will be planing out the existing surface, completing drainage works, resurfacing the splitter islands, laying a quieter road surface, painting road markings, completing the installation of the new traffic light system and cutting about 60 traffic loops. The traffic loops will allow for a more efficient flow of traffic through the roundabout as lights change according to traffic flow.

As cutting traffic loops is a noisy operation, as many as possible will be cut during the day. However some will have to be cut at night.

Extra staff will be on site at the weekend to monitor traffic flows during the daytime diversions and will make changes where necessary.

Craig Bassett, Project Manager, said: "We apologise in advance to residents and motorists for any inconvenience or difficulties this work may cause. Please be assured we are taking every measure we can to reduce disruption."

WERR is the biggest road project in the Royal Borough's history. The relief road works completion date is planned for 13 April and for Clarence Road roundabout works 19 April.
