Borough to receive extra £½m to repair potholes

The Royal Borough has welcomed the announcement of additional funding for repairing potholes and damage to roads caused by the severe winter weather.

The borough is to receive £557,721 from the Department for Transport as part of the total overall allocation of £200m to local authorities nationwide. The additional funding was anounced on Thursday (24 March) and must be spent before the end of September.

The borough's allocation is in addition to the £1.3m already in the council's 2011/12 budget to be spent on highway repair and road resurfacing.

Stephen Brown, head of highways and engineering, said: "The council is absolutely delighted with this additional financial support to repair the roads which were damaged by the extreme weather over the winter.

"We are committed to working for the safety of all our motorists and pedestrians and to maintaining our roads in as good a condition as possible. This is not an easy task when the weather takes its toll. This extra money will enable us to reinstate those roads which have been badly affected.

"Our highways inspectors will be prioritising the roads which need repairing and we will also be consulting parish councils for their help in identifying roads in their areas which have suffered the most damage.

"We also rely on our residents to continue being vigilant and to report potholes to us on 01628 796803 or through the Local Life website at https://locallife.rbwm.gov.uk."

Notes:
The Royal Borough is to spend just over £3.5m in the coming year on highway improvements ranging from more than 15 miles of road resurfacing, footway repairs and street lighting to safer routes to school, improvements to the cycle network and traffic management schemes.

The programme is paid for by a grant of £2.9m from the government and the rest from developer contributions.
