Relief road surfacing set to start

A key part of the Windsor and Eton relief road project is set to take place over three weeks from mid-February with the resurfacing of the full length of the road in both directions.

The road will be fully resurfaced with new low-noise surfacing, cracks will be repaired and uneven areas levelled.

Rejointing and waterproofing of the Maidenhead Road flyover will be carried out at the same time. This work had previously been earmarked for January with accompanying road closures which are now no longer required.

Motorists planning to use the relief road should take note of the following timetable:

Wednesday 16 February, 8pm to 5am: The northbound carriageway (heading out of Windsor) and the eastbound spur (towards Eton) will be closed to allow for contraflow posts to be put in along the full length of the relief road as well as some resurfacing. Diversion routes will be signed via the B3024, A308 and A4. Work will be completed before rush hour the next morning.
Thursday 17, 8pm to 5am: The northbound carriageway and the eastbound spur will be closed to complete Wednesday night's work. Diversion routes will be signed via the B3024, A308 and A4. Work will be completed before rush hour the next morning.
Friday 18, 8pm, to Monday 21, 5am: The southbound carriageway and westbound spur (away from Eton) will be closed and contraflow will be in place on the northbound carriageway. Works includes surfacing, crack repairs and installation of southbound carriageway contraflow posts.
Monday 21 to Thursday 24, 8pm to 5am each night: Contraflow will be in place at night on the northbound carriageway while jointing takes place on bridges on the southbound.
Friday 25, 8pm, to Monday 28, 5am: The northbound carriageway and eastbound spur will be closed and contraflow will be in place on the southbound. Works include surfacing and crack repairs.
Monday 28 February to Thursday 3 March, 8pm to 5am each night: Contraflow will be in place at night on the southbound carriageway while jointing takes place on bridges on the northbound.
Friday 4 and Saturday 5, 8pm to 5am each night: Full closure of southbound carriageway for final jointing and waterproofing, and removal of contraflow posts. Diversions will be in place along the A308, A4 and M4. Work will be completed before the rush hour on Monday morning.

While the contraflow posts are in place, vehicles will not be able to change lanes, so drivers need to ensure they are in the correct lane when they join the road.

Cllr Colin Rayner, Cabinet Member for Highways and Streetcare, said: "When tests were carried out before the works it was clear the road needed thorough resurfacing and repairs and we couldn't get away with a cosmetic makeover.

"We have tried to take every possible measure to reduce the impact on our residents and visitors, including ensuring the bulk of the work is carried out over the school half term.

"We apologise in advance to motorists for any inconvenience this work may cause. Please drive carefully while these measures are in place - or, if at all possible, find an alternative route."

All the above work is weather-dependent. A weekly works schedule is available to view at www.rbwm.gov.uk/werr

In addition, over the half term there will be a number of lane closures on the Clarence Road roundabout to allow installation of drainage pipes and ducts.

To reduce the impact on residents living near the roundabout, this work - which requires the use of jackhammers and other high-noise equipment - is being carried out during the day.

These are the final major works on the road and follow the installation of new street lights, safety barriers, acoustic barriers, new parapets and kerbing.

Once the resurfacing is completed the relief road verges will be tidied up and landscaped, including the planting of large London planes, grass and wild flowers. Clarence Road roundabout will be landscaped in April.
