Flying the flag for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

The 2012 Olympic and Paralymic Games events at Eton Dorney are just a few months away and the Royal Borough is preparing to fly the flag in celebration.

As a host borough, Windsor and Maidenhead has been given the official Games flag which will be officially unfurled by the Mayor, Cllr Asghar Majeed, at the Magnet Leisure Centre at 11am on Thursday 19 January.

The flag will be presented to the Mayor by Olympic badminton silver medallist Gail Emms at a session of s.m.i.l.e. (so much improvement with a little exercise).

Cllr Majeed said: "We are delighted to be an official host local authority for the 2012 Games and very proud to be receiving the flag from an Olympian of Gail's standard.

"We will be flying the flag from the Town Hall throughout the Olympic and Paralympic Games and also to mark the Torch Relay when it comes through our borough on 10 July 2012. We are also acquiring another flag to fly from the Guildhall, so the borough can show it is a proud supporter of the Games and will be cheering the athletes as they bid for glory."

Gail won her Olympic medal in 2004 when she partnered Nathan Robertson in the mixed badminton doubles. She also won gold in the 2006 world championships and 2004 European Championships and bronze in the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Gail is spending time in the Royal Borough visiting schools, including those taking part in the Get Set programme. Her visit to the Magnet coincides with a badminton session for members of the s.m.i.l.e. group who will be keen to get a few expert tips to improve their game.
