Olympic silver medallist to officially launch Braywick adiZone

Alex Partridge, who took silver in the rowing eights at the Beijing Olympics, will officially launch Berkshire's first adiZone outdoor gym at Braywick Park in Maidenhead on Thursday 27 January.

Guests - including Deputy Mayor Cllr Asghar Majeed, Braywick club members and pupils from Maidenhead schools - will gather from 2 to 3pm for a range of sporting activities with the ceremony taking place at 2.30pm.

The £150,000 adiZone - a multi-sports facility designed in the shape of the London 2012 Olympic logo - includes an outdoor gym, basketball area, football goal, tennis wall, climbing wall, open area for aerobics, dance and martial arts and a gymnastics area. The work was completed late last year and the facilities have been available for use since then.

The free-access facility has been funded by Olympic sponsor adidas UK through the Department of Education's co-location fund with match funding by the Royal Borough using Section 106 money.

Cllr Simon Dudley, Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Services, said: "The adiZone is a welcome addition to the many sporting activities offered at Braywick and is an ideal facility for individuals or groups of all ages and abilities.

"It means Maidenhead will have a lasting legacy of the games - and should also hopefully further boost Braywick's chances of renewing its prestigious Green Flag status next year."

Activities on the day include:
• young adiStar ambassadors training members of an over-50s SMILE (So Much Improvement With a Little Exercise) fitness group to use the adiZone equipment
• Altwood and Desborough School pupils carrying the Schools Olympic flame which is being passed between secondary and middle schools in the borough each term up to the start of London 2012
• local school groups demonstrating the different activities offered by the adiZone.
