The Council's Community Radio system that helps businesses, police and their partners to fight crime in Maidenhead and Windsor town centres is being upgraded from analogue to digital.
The existing system, which has been in operation since 1998, is now in need of upgrading to provide an even better service for all its users.
More than 30 shops and businesses in Maidenhead and Windsor have so far transferred to the new digital system and it is hoped that more will do so in the near future. The switch to digital is expected to be complete in about three months.
David Perkins, Head of Operations and Streetcare, said: "Going digital will make our town centre radio system more efficient, more user-friendly and provide much clearer reception. The police and the town centre community wardens are already using the system and have had very positive feedback.
"The community radio users who link into the CCTV in the Council's Control Room are a key part of the fight against crime and making the town centres safer for all. In 2010 /11 nearly one third of the 909 arrests attributed to CCTV were initiated by community radio users.
"I would encourage shops and businesses who haven't transferred to digital to do so as soon as possible so that this excellent partnership can further build on its successful past. Community radios will help all members of the community - demonstrating another example of the Big Society in action."
Installation, management and training is being provided in partnership with PMR Products Ltd which runs the SafetyNet software management scheme.
