Works on Clarence Road roundabout are set to step up a gear with the start of phase two which will see a new lane layout and 24-hour work to ensure the improvements are completed as quickly as possible.
Phase two, which runs until the end of February, will include work on the islands and road within the old roundabout area, completion of BT's inspection chamber and installation of a new traffic controller.
The switchover to the new lane layout will require the closure of Goslar Way northbound and the exit from the roundabout onto Imperial Road for one night only, from about 8pm to 5am.
This was planned for Sunday 5 December but severe weather has set back the scheduled programme and the switchover could be any night from Wednesday 8 December onwards - viability is being assessed on a daily basis.
On the night, diversion routes will be signposted and emergency services and bus companies notified.
In phase one kerbing was placed around the new, smaller island and splitter islands, drainage installed, electric cables diverted, gas mains redirected and the traffic controller relocated. BT also undertook a major upgrade to its inspection chamber.
On the relief road, phase one saw the installation of acoustic barriers, new lights and safety barriers, as well as a great deal of unseen work on the bridges. Phase two will see continuing works with a revised central reserve, new parapets on Intersection Bridge and jointing and waterproofing works on all of the bridges.
Cllr Colin Rayner, lead member for highways and streetcare, said: "Work is progressing well despite the recent severe weather. Road works are never a welcome neighbour and I would like to thank residents and motorists for their patience while this essential work is carried out.
"The switchover has been timed to keep disruption to a minimum and we will continue to make every possible effort to minimise the impact on residents and motorists. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused as users get used to the new layout.
"If at all possible please find an alternative route. And please do drive carefully and remain patient during the road works which are a case of short-term pain for long-term gain."
The Windsor and Eton relief road project will shut down from end of play on Friday 17 December and resume Tuesday 4 January, except for the widening of the Imperial Road underpass from Monday 20 to Thursday 23 December.
