Jubilee fountain will enhance historic Goswells

A little-used corner of The Goswells - which links Windsor town centre and Alexandra Gardens - is to benefit from the addition of an attractive water feature.

A fountain will be installed early next year in the empty space at the corner of Goswell Road and Barry Avenue, offering a tranquil space where people can take time out and relax close to the heart of Windsor.

The fountain will be 25m long with a 3m-radius circular pool at the centre. In the middle of this pool will be a 5m-high geyser with a 'crown' of 60 water jets - to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

The area around the water feature will also be landscaped to create a new garden with seating and shrubbery.

This is the second phase of a master landscape plan for Alexandra Gardens and The Goswells. First phase improvements, completed earlier this year, included a new high quality block paving path and lantern-style overhead lights, refurbished tennis courts and repollarding of the lime trees flanking the path to promote denser growth.

The £107,000 fountain and landscaping works - funded by S106 developer contributions and council contractors ISS Waterers - were agreed following consultation with local interest groups including the Windsor and Eton Society, Windsor Town Partnership, landowner the National Trust and local councillors.

Cllr Simon Dudley, cabinet member for adult and community services, said: "The recent improvements have really enhanced this historic part of Windsor and the fountain will be a welcome addition, offering a little oasis for locals, shoppers and tourists alike.

"As an added bonus the work will be completed by March - in time for the Easter holidays, the Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee."

Future plans include the potential addition of a sculpture on the footpath when funds allow.
