Winbury purchase 'exciting move for education in Maidenhead'

The former Winbury School in Hibbert Road, Maidenhead, has been bought by the Royal Borough to enable the premises to continue to be used for educational purposes should a suitable proposal be forthcoming through the government's free school programme.

The purchase of the 0.11ha site complete with existing buildings was completed on Friday 19 October. The Royal Borough will be seeking to discuss the possibilities of the site being named by free school proposers who wish to establish primary provision in the area to open in September 2014.

Cllr David Burbage, council leader, said: "This property has been a central part of Maidenhead's schooling for many years, having been the Braywick CE Primary School until 1972, so I am delighted that we were successful in acquiring it."

Cllr Eileen Quick, cabinet member for children's services, said: "This is an exciting move for education in Maidenhead. By taking this step the Royal Borough can make sure that the property is available for educational use should a suitable free school proposer group emerge."

If a free school opens on Hibbert Road it will provide more primary school places in Maidenhead, helping to ensure there are enough spaces to meet the rising demand in the town, as well as increasing choice for parents.
