Wanted: Your 1948 Olympic Torch stories - and other Games memories

What were you doing when the Olympic Torch relay came through Windsor and Maidenhead the last time England hosted the Games in 1948?

Cllr Simon Dudley, the council's cabinet member with responsibility for the 2012 Games, is asking local people with a link to the torch's historic 1948 journey through the Royal Borough to come forward and share their stories and memories of that time with today's residents.

Cllr Dudley said: "There is going to be a lot for us to celebrate and be proud of before the Olympics arrive here next summer. We want to take every opportunity to involve local people in the spectacle and theatre surrounding this once-in-a-lifetime event and then they will in turn have their own great experiences, stories and memories to pass on.

"That starts now by hearing from local people who remember 1948 and what that meant to them and the local community then."

Were you or someone in your family a torch bearer when it came through the Royal Borough then? Were you there to celebrate its journey? Maybe you or someone in your family lived locally and were part of that 1948 Olympic squad? Or maybe you have links with the 2012 Games you would like to celebrate in the run-up to the event?

If the answer is 'yes' to any of these questions the council would like to hear from you and there's a good chance you could be invited to take part in local events being organised now in the run-up to the 2012 rowing and canoeing events at Eton Dorney.

Cllr Dudley added: "The council is at the heart of what's going on around the Olympics this time round and want everyone in the Royal Borough to have the opportunity to get involved if they choose. There are many more ways to enjoy the Games than simply being a spectator at an event."
