Royal Borough community and voluntary groups are being urged to celebrate next year's Diamond Jubilee by "lighting their own fires" and joining in with the nationwide Jubilee Beacons Project to mark Her Majesty's 60 years on the throne.
The council has already been invited by the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire, The Hon Mrs Mary Bayliss, to light a beacon in the borough. This will be in Windsor Great Park on Monday 4 June 2012 - joining a total of 2012 beacons expected to be lit across the United Kingdom that evening.
Now borough residents and groups are being encouraged to follow the council's lead and organise their own beacon lighting events - and help achieve the aim of having at least six beacons in each of the six Berkshire unitary authorities.
Cllr Asghar Majeed, Mayor of the Royal Borough, said this week: "It is a real honour for the Royal Borough to be able to take part in this historic event - and we are delighted to be working with the Crown Estates to light a beacon in the Great Park.
"This is also a really exciting opportunity for our residents to contribute to a significant event in our history so please do think seriously about how you can join in and make this a truly memorable occasion.
"Unfortunately my year of office as Mayor will have come to an end by the time the beacon project takes place - but I am sure whoever takes over as Mayor will do a splendid job of lighting our local beacon and creating the Royal Borough's link in the chain of beacons across the country."
To find out more about organising beacon lighting events - or to register your event - visit the Royal Borough's website at www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/mayoralty_queens_diamond_jubilee_beacons_project.htm or email Alison Singleton, Mayor's Secretary, at mayors.parlour@rbwm.gov.uk
Organisations wishing to register an event need to do so by 30 April 2012. A special book listing all the beacon sites across the country and their lighting-up times will be given to the Queen after the event. Details of events to be held in the borough will be listed on the Royal Borough website.
