The Royal Borough is this week thanking local residents and motorists for their patience and consideration during the improvement works to the Windsor and Eton Relief Road and the Clarence Road roundabout.
With the Easter and May bank holiday weekends just around the corner the council is reassuring residents that the £7m project is very near completion. The remainder of the work - including new travel signage along the relief road and landscaping to the roundabout - is scheduled to take place in early to mid-May.
Stephen Brown, Head of Highways and Engineering, said: "The end of this major project is now well and truly in sight and we would like to thank both residents living near the roundabout and motorists using the relief road for bearing with us during these essential improvement works.
"We have carefully avoided carrying out the remaining works over the Easter and bank holiday weekends to maintain traffic flow in the area at a traditionally very busy time.
"The rest of the work which is limited to tidying up and new signage is expected to take place in early to mid-May after the three holiday periods and should result in only very minimal disruption to traffic during off-peak periods.
"During this period we will also be closely monitoring the new roundabout to enable us to fine tune the new traffic signals.
"With regard to the landscaping we will be putting in above-ground landscaping rather than sowing grass as we need to avoid contact with the underground services beneath the tarmac island."
The major project - on the borough's busiest road, carrying up to 22million vehicles a year - has taken just under a year to complete and includes:
• resurfacing of the carriageway with low noise surfacing
• new acoustic safety barriers to further reduce noise
• repairs to the road, bridges and parapets
• changes to the Clarence Road roundabout layout
• new road markings and traffic loops to reduce traffic delays and
• the creation and landscaping of new traffic islands.
Information about the final stages of the work will be available nearer the time through the Royal Borough website and the next newsletter to residents.
