Sociable people with a fine, loud voice and a great sense of humour are invited to apply for a volunteer role with a difference - as the Royal Borough's town crier.
Councillors in July voted to reinstate the role of town crier following a motion from Cllr Alan Mellins, bringing back a tradition of making public announcements not seen for nearly 100 years in Maidenhead and well over 100 years in Windsor. The last town crier recorded in Maidenhead was in 1922 and in Windsor 1892.
The council is now looking to fill the role with a closing date for applications of Monday 15 October.
A job description which lists essential personal qualities as a fine voice with good volume even without amplification, good with people and children, a desire to meet and interact with people individually and in groups and a great sense of humour is available at www.rbwm.gov.uk
Along with an impressive set of robes the successful person can expect to be an integral part of all kinds of events in Windsor, Maidenhead and borough-wide. Duties will include 'To perambulate regularly the towns to welcome residents and visitors alike, spreading warmth and joy amongst all people'.
While the role is voluntary, mileage will be paid where required as will expenses for any engagements outside of the borough.
Cllr Mellins is delighted that his proposal was so warmly welcomed by fellow councillors. He said: "We are all justifiably proud of our heritage and royal connections and I felt strongly that the role of town crier would be a fitting addition to many of our events in towns and villages across the borough.
"It is a long-established role which emphasises the importance of history and tradition which we hold so dear - and will undoubtedly be very popular with residents and tourists alike."
Anyone who thinks they can do credit to this special role is welcome to call Andrew Scott, democratic services manager, on 01628 796028, for further details.
