The triangle created by Maidenhead's Linden Avenue, Courthouse Road and Furze Platt Road - with its wealth of Victorian and Edwardian buildings - has been proposed as a conservation area.
Now anyone interested in commenting on the proposals is invited to take part in a public consultation.
The proposal has been led by local residents who largely wrote the appraisal document. While residents have been consulted on previously proposed conservation areas this is the first time they have taken the initiative themselves.
Cllr Christine Bateson, Cabinet Member for Planning and Development, said: "Following the creation of the Riverside conservation area it is fitting that another part of Maidenhead rich in historically and architecturally important buildings be given the opportunity to also be protected.
"Thank you to the residents who took the initiative - and the time - to come up with this proposal. This really is a wonderful example of the Big Society in action with residents getting involved in community planning."
The public consultation started yesterday (Monday 3 October) and runs until Monday 31 October.
A letter has been sent to all residents directly affected and those abutting the proposed boundary. Others invited to comment include ward councillors, local amenity societies, businesses and other interested parties, and national bodies such as English Heritage - but any person, business or organisation with an interest is welcome to comment.
A public drop-in session will be held at Furze Platt War Memorial Hall, Furze Platt Road, on Wednesday 19 October from 4.30 to 8.30pm.
After the consultation period all comments will be reviewed and Cabinet will decide at its 15 December meeting on which proposals are formally approved.
