Plans have been drawn up to minimise the impact on Royal Borough residents of additional traffic generated by next year's Olympic rowing events at Dorney Lake.
Cabinet members on Thursday (29 September) gave the thumbs-up for a Local Area Traffic Management Plan to be set up in partnership with the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to manage the expected increase in traffic.
Arrangements already in place include:
• spectators will walk from the transport hub at Windsor Racecourse to the rowing lake across a temporary pedestrian bridge over the Thames
• park and ride sites will be set up (subject to planning approval) at Braywick Park and Stafferton Way in Maidenhead; Windsor Great Park and Upton Court Park in Slough, with shuttle buses transporting visitors to the main transport hub
• rail travellers arriving at Windsor and Eton Riverside, Maidenhead and Slough stations will also be taken by shuttle bus to the hub
• cyclists will be encouraged to use the enhanced cycle network with temporary cycle parking at the hub
• some parking will be available for private coach operators at the transport hub and a drop-off point available for taxis.
The only spectator parking at the hub will be for Blue Badge holders.
Cllr Phill Bicknell, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Environment, said: "This is a truly unique opportunity for the Royal Borough to support the success of the London Olympics and promote the local area to the thousands of expected visitors - while maintaining our commitment to putting our residents first.
"Their safety and wellbeing is at the forefront of our involvement in this fantastic event and we must do everything in our power to minimise the impact of the extra traffic which will be generated during the Games.
"That is why we are working closely with organisers to set up a comprehensive traffic plan - while urging residents to get behind the spirit of the Games and enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime experience!"
