The Mayor of the Royal Borough, Cllr Colin Rayner, and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Andrew Jenner, will join fellow councillors, officers and representatives of the Royal Air Force Association on Sunday September 16 at services in both Windsor and Maidenhead to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Both church services begin at 11am.
In Windsor Cllr Rayner will lead a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial in front of Windsor Parish Church in the High Street at 10.45am prior to the church service. Wreaths will also be laid by representatives of the Royal Air Force Association and the Air Training Corps before the traditional two minutes' silence and the sounding of The Last Post and Reveille. The civic party and ex-service organisations will then process into the parish church for a short service starting at 11am.
Cllr Rayner said this week: "I would encourage Royal Borough residents to attend one of the ceremonies and give up a few minutes of their time on Sunday to remember the airmen and members of the Royal Air Force who gave their lives so that we could be free."
In Maidenhead Cllr Jenner will lead the civic party, RAFA representatives and ATC members from St Mary's Borough Church in High Street to the war memorial outside the Town Hall for a short wreath-laying ceremony at 10.25am before processing back to St Mary's Church for the service at 11am.
Brief road closures will be necessary in Windsor from the junction of Sheet Street and Park Street to the junction of High Street and Thames Street between 10.40 and 11am and again from 11.40am to 12noon to allow the ceremony to take place safely.
As the Maidenhead Half Marathon is also taking place on the same day road closures will be in place in Maidenhead from 7am until 1pm along the entire length of St Ives Road as well as the High Street from its junction with Market Street to its junction with Bridge Avenue.
There will be no parking available in the Town Hall car park as this is being used as the race headquarters for the half marathon. Drivers are advised to use Hines Meadow and Grove Road car parks. All Maidenhead town centre car parks are free on Sundays (except the Magnet Leisure Centre car park).
