Keeping traffic and transport moving for the Paralympic Games at Eton Dorney

After the huge success of the London 2012 Olympic rowing and canoe sprint events at Eton Dorney the focus shifts to the Paralympic Games and three days of events from Friday 31 August to Sunday 2 September.

With access arrangements at the northern entrance on the Buckinghamshire side of the lake, there will be a much reduced impact on the Royal Borough as the Windsor Racecourse transport hub used for the Olympic Games will not be in use.

However, the council is still heavily involved in helping to ensure that the event takes place smoothly and safely for everyone concerned.

Cllr Phill Bicknell, cabinet member for highways, transport and environment, said: "The traffic and transport arrangements for the Olympic Games set a high standard - universally hailed as a huge success. Although access for the Paralympic Games will be from the Bucks side of the lake, we in the Royal Borough will be working with our neighbouring local authorities and the police to make sure the arrangements are equally smooth.

"It is very important that the A4 is kept moving throughout the three days of competition so we appeal to drivers to steer clear of the northern access to the venue during the peak morning times of 7 to 9am and between 12noon and 2pm in the afternoons."

Key information for Royal Borough residents:
• Access for all spectators, athletes and officials is from Court Lane/Marsh Lane off the A4.
• The council's advice is: Do not drive to the venue - there is no parking provision there and it is vital to keep the A4 and other local roads moving.
• The designated spectator rail stations are Slough and Windsor & Eton Riverside (free shuttle buses will operate).
• Park and ride facilities will operate from Upton Court, Slough, and Stafferton Way, Maidenhead.
• Spectator numbers are expected to be around 10,000 a day (compared to the 20,000 for the Olympics).
• All the Olympic event day parking zones to the south of the river will be removed, with the exception of those in Eton Wick and at Tithe Barn Drive (off Monkey Island Lane). • There is no designated walking route to the venue.
• Waste collections in the borough - which were scheduled earlier each day during the Olympic Games - will take place as normal.

In the meantime the Paralympic Torch Relay will make its way from Stoke Mandeville to London on a 24-hour journey starting at 8pm on Tuesday 28 August and ending at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games the following evening.

Some 116 teams of five Torchbearers will carry the Torch along the 92-mile route and spectators are encouraged to line the streets to cheer on the Flame.
