Signposting the way for families of children with special needs

Parents, carers, grandparents and other family members are gathering at the latest Parents in Partnership forum today (Thursday June 19).

The forum – aimed at helping families of children with special educational needs or disabilities by providing information and an opportunity to ask questions – is organised by the Royal Borough and attended by children's and family services professional and volunteer workers.

It will be held at Ellington extended services centre, West Dean, off Ray Mill Road West, Maidenhead, between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

Highlights include:
· The chance to pick up the third edition of Signpost, a leaflet produced by the Royal Borough which points parents of children with special or additional needs in the right direction, including information on education, social care, health, local and national support groups, money matters, leisure time and playschemes
· Talks on holiday child care, the transition from school to adulthood, the inclusive services review and an update on the communication and interaction review
· Small informal group discussions where questions can be asked and answered by professionals.

Cllr Eileen Quick, lead member for children's services, said: "Raising children with special or additional needs can create challenges for parents and the extended family.

"The Royal Borough is committed to guiding families through practical advice and support as well as the listening ear of experienced professionals.

"The forum, which meets once a term at different venues across the borough, is the ideal opportunity for everyone to gather together to hear the latest updates and to ask questions in a relaxed and informal setting."

Anyone who cannot make it to the forum but would like a copy of Signpost can request one from the Children's Information Service on 01628 781430.
