Windsor & Royal Borough Museum opened in new premises in March 2011 at: The Guildhall, High Street, Windsor SL4 1LR. On 9 December 2011 the museum was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen, see our News page for more information.

The museum is a registered, family-friendly and accessible small local history museum in a Grade I listed building. Come and discover the history of the town and the area. Listen to the stories of people who lived and worked here.

The Collection

The collection relates to the history of Windsor, and the other towns and villages across the Borough in East Berkshire.

The collection is looked after by the Museum & Collections Officer, with the help of a Museum Assistant. The museum is supported by the Friends of Windsor & Royal Borough Museum, which includes a team of museum volunteers who assist at the store with caring for and researching the collection. A second team of volunteers led by museum staff provides stewards for the museum.

The collection comprises a wide variety of objects including pre-historic tools finds and Bronze Age, Roman and Saxon artefacts, maps, textiles, books, paintings, prints and photographs, together with objects and ephemera from before Victorian times up to World War II, the 1950s and the present day.

Small Displays

A display of recent acquisitions can be seen in Windsor Library, Bachelors Acre,Windsor SL4 1ER. A lift is available to the displays on the first floor. There is also a themed display in a case in York House, Sheet Street, Windsor and in Cox Green Library near Maidenhead.

The Museum Store

The Museum Store is closed to the public, but is open to visitors by appointment only on Wednesday mornings, when local historians are available to help with enquiries and research. To book an appointment, please email museum@rbwm.gov.uk.
