Parish and Town Councils in the Royal Borough

Town and Parish Councils are set up under the Local Government Act 1972 and are an essential part of the structure of local democracy. They play a vital role in acting on behalf of the communities they represent and have a wide range of powers, such as looking after community buildings, open space, allotments, play areas, street lighting, bus shelters and car parks.

Town and Parish Councils have the power to raise money through taxation (the precept). The precept is the parish/town council's share of the council tax, which is collected by the Royal Borough on behalf of the Parish/Town Councils.

Within the Royal Borough there are 14 Parish Councils and 1 Town Council. A Town Council has the same powers as a Parish Council, it is simply that the Council has decided to take on the title 'town'. Elections to parish councils are held every four years.
