Motions Approved by Council: 2011 - 2012

Council Meeting - 6 December 2011

Motion - Land adjacent to Ockwells Manor

Prroposer: Councillor Mellins
Seconder: Councillor Bullock

RESOLVED: The land adjacent to Ockwells Manor, a Grade 1 Listed manor house, is currently protected by a National Trust covenant in order to preserve its historic setting. However, this land is currently under threat from development. This Council resolves to put the land protected by the covenant into the Green Belt, using the new Local Borough plan as soon as practically possible. This will both preserve the setting of Ockwells Manor and avoid overloading the present Cox Green infrastructure.

  • Lead Member: Councillor Mrs Bateson
  • Lead Officer: Simon Hurrell
  • Action Taken: To include land in the Green Belt and be incorporated into the new Local Borough Plan for publication in Autumn 2012.

Motion - Metal Theft

Proposer: Councillor Jenner
Seconder: Councillor Hill

RESOLVED: That metal theft is estimated to cost the UK economy £770m per year. However as well as the economic cost there is also the emotional cost of metal theft. The appalling theft of the statue on Ray Mill Island and the thefts from war memorials across the country highlights the need for tougher regulation. This Council welcomes the introduction of the Metal Theft (Prevention) Bill to Parliament which looks to introduce, among other things, a licensing scheme for scrap metal dealers; to enable magistrates' courts to add restrictions to licences to deal in scrap metal and to introduce criminal charges for theft of scrap metal which take into account aspects of the crime other than the value of the scrap metal stolen.
  • Lead Member: Councillor Bicknell
  • Lead Officer: Alastair Gilchrist
  • Action Taken: Welcome new Bill and await its progress.

Council Meeting - 27 September 2011

Motion - Liberal Democrat proposals to tax residents in wealthy areas.

Proposer: Councillor Dudley
Seconder: Councillor Hill

RESOLVED: That this Council believes that Liberal Democrat proposals to tax residents in wealthy areas more than the cost of providing services to them and then redistributing this excess money to other areas is fundamentally wrong. This Council therefore resolves to make clear its position that taxes raised locally should stay in that area and not be redistributed to other areas

  • Lead Member: Councillor Kellaway
  • Lead Officer: Andrew Brooker
  • Action Taken: See resolution in motion.

Motion - Barnardo's "Cut them free" Campaign

Proposer: Councillor Mrs Airey
Seconder: Councillor Mrs Quick

RESOLVED: That Barnardo's has launched the Cut them free campaign to end the horror of child sexual exploitation in the UK. Child sexual exploitation is an appalling and often hidden crime where perpetrators manipulate children and young people into performing sexual acts. This Council resolves to continue to provide a comprehensive safeguarding service and to highlight the excellent work that Barnardo's does.

Lead Member: Councillor Mrs Quick
Lead Officer: Cliff Turner
Action Taken: See resolution in motion.
