Pilates

Pilates is suitable for men and women of all ages, it can be beneficial for sports people who have suffered injuries, dancers where good posture is vital, back-pain sufferers who's problems are postural and elderly people who want to maintain mobility.

Pilates is a non-aerobic total body conditioning exercise focusing on 8 main principles:

  1. Concentration - every movement begins as a thought process.
  2. Thoracic Breathing - correct breathing is very important in pilates. If we breathe fully, the blood pumps effectively and stimulates all the cells in the body.
  3. Centring  - every exercise is controlled by the contraction of the abdominal muscles, creating our core or centre.
  4. Control - working against gravity strengthens the body. The slower the movement the more strength we gain.
  5. Precision - every movement is executed with the best possible care and precision.
  6. Flowing Movement - pilates exercises are a continuous movement executed slowly.
  7. Isolation - we learn how to control the various muscle groups in our bodies, working within our strengths and weaknesses.
  8. Routine - repetition and frequency of the exercise being undertaken increases the skill level.
