SensoryZone

The SensoryZone can be used for relaxation, stimulation, leisure & pleasure by people of all ages and abilities. For details on how to book, please contact the Magnet on 01628 776963.

Multi-sensory rooms evolved from the Dutch concept of 'Snoezelen' ('sniff' & 'doze').

They are specifically designed environments which create a very wide range of sensory experiences for :

  • Therapy
  • Relaxation
  • Learning and fun for people with special needs

They can also be used to develop :

  • Hand-eye co-ordination and
  • Understanding of 'cause and effect'

The concept is to create events and focus on particular senses such as:

  • Touch
  • Vision
  • Sound
  • Smell
  • Taste

all if which can be manifested in many ways through :

  • Sound (music)
  • Visual effects
  • Tactile experience (eg. vibration)
  • Use of aromas

The result is a very special room in which the participant can completely relax or interact and control all elements of space. It gives people control for possibly the first time in their lives. It enables people to change and influence their environment in a positive way.

SensoryZone aims include:

  • Providing an environment that gently stimulates all the senses and heightens awareness and promotes relaxation
  • Providing an interesting atmosphere to encourage participants to explore their environment
  • Providing an unrestrained atmosphere where participants feel able to enjoy themselves

Guidelines when using the SensoryZone:

  • SensoryZone is fully accessible for wheelchair users. Once the user is in the room the wheelchair must be stored safely in the stairwell outside the room.
  • If people are using a matrix wheelchair, these can be stored along the corridor safely so that they do not restrict the fire access.
  • People will need to bring their own hoist slings for individuals who need to use the hoist; this can be used with any sling apart from Arjo slings.
  • Sessions should last not longer than an hour. Initial sessions no longer than approximately 20 minutes. Actual length of sessions will vary depending on the individual.
