Cholesterol

It is important that Cholesterol levels are checked for anybody, as anyone can have high cholesterol without any obvious signs.

Cholesterol is essential for good health and is found in every cell in the human body 70% of cholesterol is made by our body in the liver and 30% comes from our diet.  It plays an important part in the production of vitamin D, which helps build strong bones; the production of bile salts that are necessary in the digestion of fat.  Cholesterol is also the material that the body uses to make essential hormones.

Total Cholesterol has two main parts ot it, HDL's or High Density Lipoproteins or LDL's, Low Density Lipoproteins.  The HDL's are the 'Good' Cholesterol and the LDL's are the 'Bad' Cholesterol.  Excess LDL's stick to the artery walls this can therefore lead to increased risk of Cronic Heart Disease.  HDL's however act as 'refuse collectors', cleaning up excess LDL cholesterol.

Total Cholesterol level should be ideally below 5.0mmol.  If it is above 6.0mmol it is advisable to seek medical advice.
