Hackney Carriage (Taxi) and Private Hire Licences

Licensing

The Royal Borough is responsible for the licensing of Hackney Carriage (Taxis), Private Hire Drivers and Private Hire Operators who wish to operate within the Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

Licensing Update - 1st May 2013

Following the full Licensing Panel held on Monday 29th April 2013, the following condition is to take immediate effect :-

  • Any vehicle to be licensed as a private hire or hackney carriage vehicle must have an MOT certificate no more than 28 days old at the time of appointment. This applies to both new applications, renewals and transfers.
  • From the 30th April 2013 we will be unable to license any vehicle without an MOT certificate within 28 days of issue.

It was also decided that Hackney Carriage numbers be derestricted with immediate effect. Therefore there will be no more taxi draws and it is now possible to apply for a Hackney Vehicle providing that you have a suitable vehicle at time of licence and a valid Hackney Carriage or Dual Badge.

  • The vehicle must be under 3 years of age.
  • Must be wheelchair accessible and have low volume or whole type approval.
  • The vehicle must be white with pantone 2.59 colour on the boot and bonnet.
  • You must have a completed application together with the fee of £500.

Appointments may be booked via the Customer Contact Centre as normal on 01628 683840. Priority will not be given to new Hackney Licences and appointments will be booked in the next available slot. Our full policy and conditions are available on this website.

Information for Private Hire or Hackney Carriage Driver licensing applicants

Before a driver licence can be issued the following checks will be carried out to determine if you are a 'fit and proper person' to be issued with a licence: The Royal

  • Driving licence check - DVLA
  • Medical - this must be conducted by your registered General Practitioner
  • Driving Standards Agency - DSA - test
  • Disclosure & Barring Service - CRB Application
  • Certificate of Good Conduct*

*An authenticated certificate of good conduct should be obtained by applicants who have not been resident in the United Kingdom for the previous 5 years. You must obtain this from your appropriate embassy and this must be provided in English.

Documents needed

You must provide the following documents ensuring that they all show your full name and your current address. Without these documents your application cannot proceed:

  • A valid passport
  • If appropriate, a valid visa in your passport - we are unable to accept letters from the Home Office
  • Your DVLA licence including the paper counterpart
  • Two recent utility bills - less than 3 months old
