Hackney Carriage (Taxi) and Private Hire Licences

Licensing

The Royal Borough is responsible for the licensing of Hackney Carriage (Taxis), Private Hire Drivers and Private Hire Operators who wish to operate within the Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

As a new applicant please contact the Customer Contact Centre on 01628 683840 for an Application Pack to be sent to you. Before a driver licence can be issued checks will be carried out to determine if you are a 'fit and proper person' to be issued with a licence:

Compliance tests will replace your MOT and these should be no older than 28 days at the time of the vehicle being licensed. The Licensing Team will no longer be checking a vehicle as this will be done at the time of the Compliance Test.

The approved Garages will check there is a first aid kit and fire extinguisher and will vehicle will be checked to ensure the interior and exterior of the vehicle are clean and fit for purpose.

Complaints against a licensed Driver or licensed Vehicle

Complaints against a Taxi or Private Hire Driver and/or vehicle must be made in writing to Licensing Section, Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Town Hall, St Ives Road, Maidenhead SL6 1RFor via email at licensing@rbwm.gov.uk . Pease give as much detail as you can, including the Driver's badge number, the plate or registration of the vehicle. Please also include the date and time of the incident and details of the journey if this is appropriate.

Operators

Private Hire Operator licences are required by individuals or firms taking bookings for the hire of private hire vehicles. The law requires that operators must be licensed by the same authority licensing the vehicles and drivers working within their control.

New applicants will be subject to a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) formerly Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check before an Operator Licence can be issued. Current licence holders are required to have an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check every 3 years.
