Licensing Act 2003

The Licensing Act 2003 has provided the biggest shake-up in licensing in this country for nearly 40 years.  It has replaced over 80 pieces of legislation and has meant that the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has taken over the licensing of the sale of alcohol in its area.  In addition, the Council will be responsible for the licensing of premises that sell hot food and drink between the hours of 11.00 pm and 5.00 am, which is being done for the first time. Currently there are 635 premises in the Council's area which are licensed.

Statement of Licensing Policy
The new law requires the Council to publish a Statement of Licensing Policy.   This Policy Statement has been the subject of widespread consultation, which was undertaken over a period of months.  It included all Councillors, Senior Officers of the Council, the Police, the Fire and Ambulance Services, representatives of residents' organisations and businesses in the Royal Borough.  In addition there have been a series of meetings with owners and managers of those premises currently licensed by the Magistrates'.
