Volunteering in the Library



We appreciate and encourage the vital role our volunteers play in extending our service; we are keen to make use of their knowledge and skills.

Enquiry volunteer (Windsor only)

  • Proficient IT skills and creative problem solver
  • Good customer care and communication skills
  • Demonstrate an interest in local studies

Home Library volunteer

  • Take books to people who can't make it to a library
  • Deliver books and spend time getting to know your customers; about two hours every three weeks
  • Work independently and decide on number of visits
  • You need transport and we pay a mileage allowance

Lending Library volunteer

  • Evening and weekend hours in community libraries
  • Tidy and shelve books, mend, jacket and tag stock
  • Help behind the scenes in the library and develop skills like communication, teamwork, and initiative

Book Group leader

  • You can promote reading with our support
  • You will be articulate, good with people, interested in books and able to commit to regular sessions
  • Meet for an hour, once a month at varied locations
  • Liaise with staff and book group members to decide which books to read and chair meetings

IT Session leader

  • Proficient in IT, able to deliver training, with lots of patience and able to commit time on a weekly basis
  • Sole charge of sessions, with initial training and staff on hand for support
  • IT sessions vary and are at different locations

IT supporter (Maidenhead only)

  • Proficient in IT
  • Able to deliver training, with lots of patience and able to commit time on a weekly basis
  • Support Adult Education IT workshop trainers

Event organiser

  • A great opportunity to work as part of a team
  • You will prepare for and tidy up after events, greet and usher attendees
  • Warm and outgoing, you will anticipate customer
    and staff needs
  • Events are usually library based and in the evening
  • We can run events in the local community

Event assistant

  • Good customer care and communication skills; confident and outgoing
  • Assist staff in preparing for and tidying up after events, greet and usher attendees
  • A team player who is flexible and helpful
  • Demonstrate a love of reading

Homework facilitator

  • Support the learning needs of young people
  • You will be articulate, good with children and love books and reading
  • Proficient in IT, able to deliver training, with lots of patience and able to commit time on a weekly basis
  • Liaise with staff to facilitate homework sessions
  • Delivered at various libraries

Rhymetime / Storytime volunteer

  • Support rhymetimes and storytimes in term time sessions; support or run rhymetimes and storytimes for holiday events
  • Have confidence to lead individual events
  • Good customer care, outgoing and excellent communication skills
  • Have fun singing and reading to children
  • Adaptable and approachable
