Family history

We have books to help you trace your family history. Maidenhead and Windsor Libraries also have the International Genealogical Index on microfiche. Maidenhead Library has the unique John Brooks bequest of transcripts of most Berkshire Parish Registers up to 1837.

• Family Search - An internet version of the Mormon IGI. Good for early baptisms and marriages. Also includes 1881 census index
• FFHS - The Federation of Family History Societies - national umbrella organisation for local family history societies. Links to their Family History Online set of pay-per-view databases
• Freebmd - A growing database drawn from the GRO births, marriages and deaths index (1837 - 1906). Over 60 million entries
• Genuki - Web sources on family history in the UK and Ireland. Allows you to home in on and link to national or county resources, record offices and societies
• SOCGEN - Society of Genealogists - London HQ has important library and sources. Links to their English Origins databases project
• London Metropolitan Archives: Family History pages
• Family Records Centre of the Office for National Statistics
• National Archives - The National Archives is the UK government's official archive, containing over 1,000 years of history.
• Find My Past - Pay-per-view site offering images of the GRO births, marriages and deaths index 1837 - 2001, and all the censuses including the 1911 Census.
• Family history resources for the UK and overseas on the British Library website
• CWGC - Commonwealth War Graves Commission. A large database of soldiers who died in First, Second and other wars, whose graves the Commission is responsible for. Sometimes gives family details.
