About Us

Our area, people and aims

The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, with its history, Royalty, countryside and modern economic development, spans the Thames 30 miles west of London. The area boasts good schools, high employment, an attractive environment and a lively social scene - making it an exciting and challenging place to live and work.

The Council, one of six unitary authorities created in Berkshire in 1998, is recognised as a community leader. We employ more than 5,000 staff to help us deliver a quality service to a population of around 135,000 people, and we're an accredited Investor in People, committed to equality of opportunity and a believe that staff development is a vital part of our commitment to meeting the needs of local people.

In the Council's Community Strategy 2007-2010 (currently under review), we outline our mission as:

'We want the Royal Borough to be a place where everyone can thrive in a safe and healthy environment, take an active part in decision making and continue to learn and develop throughout their lives.'

Our strategic priorities and core values (in the Strategic Plan 2007-2010) are:

  • Residents First
  • Value for Money
  • Delivering Together
  • Equipping Ourselves for the Future

All of the Council's corporate services also share a single, unifying mission:

'To provide leadership, support and challenge across the Council, so that all services are of the highest possible quality.'
