Following a change in the law, which came into force on 1 January 2007, electors who wish to vote by post for any election are now required to provide personal identifiers (i.e. their date of birth and a specimen of their signature) on their postal vote application form. These personal identifiers will be stored securely.
Each time you vote by post, your signature and date of birth provided on the postal voting statement will be checked against these identifiers to ensure your postal vote remains secure. If you are unable to provide a signature, or you are unable to sign in a consistent or distinctive way because of any disability, or you are unable to read or write, the registration officer, in these circumstances, may grant you an exemption, which will mean you will not be required to provide a signature. Please contact the Electoral Services Team for further information.
Failure or refusal to provide the required personal identifiers will mean your postal vote application cannot be accepted and you will need to visit the polling station to vote.
If you already have a Postal vote you will by now have received a letter from us asking for your signature and date of birth. You must complete this form and return it to us otherwise you will lose your postal vote.
If you wish to apply for a postal vote you can download a form from the link on this page. This must be completed strictly in accordance with the instructions and returned to us by post as soon as possible.
We will accept correctly completed postal vote applications up to 11 working days before an election. If we receive your application after the 11th day and prior to a forthcoming election you will not be able to vote by post at that particular election and must go to your polling station to vote.
If you wish to change any of your postal voting arrangements in the future or wish to apply for an exemption, please contact the help line number shown below.
If you are unable to vote at the polling station and you wish someone to vote on your behalf you can apply to vote by Proxy.
An application form to vote by Proxy is available for download from the Electoral Commission Website. This should be returned to Electoral Services at the address below.
