The Register of Electors needs to be as accurate and up to date as possible. It is necessary to update the register every year. To do this, the Royal Borough conducts a canvass of the whole borough in August/September every year.
Every household must respond during the annual canvass, even if you have recently registered. Failure to return the form could lead to a fine of up to £1,000. If we do not get a response for two consecutive years then all details are removed from the Register of Electors for that property and you will need to complete a new application form.
To be included in the register of electors, which is published on or before 1 December, a person must:
If you are a British citizen resident overseas then you can apply to be an overseas elector. As long as you were registered to vote in the UK within the last 15 years then you can register to vote from Overseas. Please contact the Elections office for application forms and advice or go to www.aboutmyvote.co.uk
If you are a member of the British Army, the Royal Navy or the Royal Air Force, you can register as a service voter, this allows you to register at an address in the UK whilst posted abroad. Alternatively you can complete the Electoral Registration Application form and be added to the register at your home address in the UK.
