Occupational Health and Safety

Aim: "To establish and maintain safe places of work and working practices throughout the Borough, in those premises falling within the Council's statutory responsibilities and to strive towards minimising the level of preventable accidents."

The Commercial Services Team is responsible for enforcing the Health and Safety at Work Etc. Act 1974 in over 3000 premises in the service sector. Including:

  •  Sports Centres
  •  Warehouses
  •  Offices
  •  Launderettes
  •  Shops

    and also: 
  • Inspecting and advising on hazards and how to reduce the risk of serious accidents
  • Investigating complaints from the public and employees regarding health and safety matters
  • Investigating accidents and dangerous occurrences ranging from minor injuries (cuts, bruises, strains) to serious incidents or death
  • Registration of ear piercing/acupuncture/ electrolysis and tattooing
