Air quality is a major issue in all towns and cities in the UK and in the south east in particular.
Government requires all unitary, district and borough councils to review air quality in their areas with the aim of ensuring that air quality objectives are achieved. These objectives can be viewed on the Department for Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) web pages http://www.defra.gov.uk/.
The Air Quality for The Royal Borough is presently monitored at 12 sites of interest around the Borough as two new sites have just been added to Windsor. Diffusion tubes are used to check levels of nitrogen dioxide, a main constituent of motor vehicle pollution. Following the recent review of air quality, additional sites are being set up to refine the data and two real time monitors will be set up - one in Windsor near to the end of the Relief Road (A332) and in Maidenhead town centre.
Each Local Authorilty (LA) has a responsibility to collect air quality data in order that a national overview can be maintained. In areas where air quality does not comply with air quality objectives, a local authority will be required to declare an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA), a device which seeks to set up measures to address the problems creating the situation and seek a means of achieving compliance with air quality objectives.
