Employment of Children

New byelaws have been adopted by The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.  These affect both the hours that children may work and the type of work some children may do.  For a child of compulsory school to work lawfully, they must have a work permit.  These permits are issued by the Education Welfare Service.  Application forms can be obtained from secondary schools or download it at the bottom of this page.

In relation to the employment of children, there are three different types of days.  These are:

  a)  Days when pupils are expected to attend school.
  b)  Sundays
  c)  All other days when schools are closed.

All work permits are issued subject to the approval of the Local Education Authority.

These Byelaws are in addition to any other Rules and Regulations, which apply to any particular workplace, e.g. Health and Safety Regulations, etc

All children must have at least two weeks free from work during the school holidays each year.

Note to employers: Within one week of employment, the employer must send a completed application form to the local authority.
