How Children are Referred to Us

Pre-school referrals are received directly from health or field services, i.e. Hospital Audiology or Orthoptics Departments.

School aged pupil are usually referred to us by their school or education authority.

We guarantee to make contact after referral within 24 hours for a pre-school child or within one week for a school aged pupil.

On referral, the Sensory Consortium Service sends a referral questionnaire for completion and may then refer the child/young person or liaise with an alternative service if appropriate.

The Sensory Consortium Service may complete an on-site assessment including:

  • Observation.
  • Pupil/parent interview.
  • Teacher consultation.
  • Assessment activities.
  • Verbal report/action plan.

A written Assessment Report and Recommendations will be provided which includes the application of a Service matrix.

The outcome options may include one or more of the following:

  • No further action.
  • Option of re-referral.
  • Referral or joint working with other services.
  • Taken onto caseload as: 'A' Category Teaching Programme; 'B' Category Progress Programme; 'C' Category Monitoring Programme.
