I am worried about my child's progress.  What can I do?

If you are concerned about your child you should talk to his or her class teacher.  There will be a teacher at your child's school who has a responsibility for children with special educational needs known as a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator).  If there is concern at school this teacher will be able to explain what help is being given to your child.

All mainstream schools provide special help for children with special educational needs.

You are an active partner with your child's school.  The school should tell you  about your child's progress, listen to your concerns, and work with you to make sure that your child gets a proper education.

If you are still concerned following your discussions with the school you can ask the LA to undertake a statutory assessment of your child's possible special educational needs by completing the form linked to this site).

Please note that a statutory assessment is undertaken by the education authority only in the most extreme of cases.  Some 2 per cent of the population under the age of 19 might be expected to have such extreme needs.
