The Child Poverty Act 2010 requires all Local Authorities and named partners to work together to understand what needs to be done to tackle child poverty and to develop and publish a coordinated Child Poverty Strategy.
Local Authorities are named as the strategic lead for child poverty, with the following organisations as named partners: District Authorities, Police, Youth Offending Teams, Probation Service, Transport Authorities, National Health Service, Strategic Health Authorities and Job Centre Plus.
We can only tackle child poverty by coordinating efforts to help parents access sustainable employment and improve their skills. At the same time, our challenge is to give children and young people the best possible start in life so that they have the skills, confidence and opportunity to achieve their full potential.
RBWM's Child Poverty Strategy is based on a recent assessment of patterns of child poverty in the local area. This needs assessment is expected to be an ongoing process and updated regularly. In line with national guidance, we have set a limited scope for the initial assessment that will be broadened in future reviews on the Strategy.
The immediate focus of the needs assessment is linked to the Partnership Plan for Children and Young People's priority to enable children and young people to achieve their full potential. Through our analysis we aim to achieve a better understanding of the relationship between financial deprivation and educational achievement.
Our Child Poverty Strategy is included within our Partnership Plan for Children and Young people 2011 - 14.
