Building Schools for the Future

BSF LogoBuilding Schools for the Future (BSF) is a national secondary school renewal programme that allows local authorities to transform education in a way that best serves their local communities for generations to come.

The Government says that by 2020 each local authority in the country can expect to have completely rebuilt approximately half of its secondary school buildings.  The other half will be substantially refurbished or remodelled.  The size and scope of BSF means that different local authorities benefit from BSF at different times.  Until recently, the Royal Borough did not expect to gain from BSF until 2016, but a government review of the national programme means that there is now a strong possibility that we could start in the next few years.

Initially, we can expect investment worth up to £80m, allowing us to create world-class, 21st century secondary schools.  The first part of the borough to benefit will be Maidenhead, followed by Ascot, Datchet & Wraysbury and Windsor in future years.

The BSF programme is very complicated and time-consuming so we have decided to start planning now.  One of our most important objectives is to make sure that the views of children and young people, parents, staff, governors and others who have an interest in secondary education are taken into account at the earliest opportunity.  This will enable us to get local agreement about ambitious but achievable options for secondary schools that will deliver educational transformation for all children.
