Developing a culture of Learning for Sustainability defines the Council's approach to all its work on sustainable development, both internally (how the Council goes about its business) and externally (seeking to influence behaviour change in the wider community).
The reason for this approach is that our communities are currently unsustainable at a local and global level.
As a community, most of our energy is generated from unsustainable sources; we use fuels and materials inefficiently; we are facing climate change, potential food shortages and increasing environmental degradation and we are really not sure about the way ahead.
Developing sustainable communities therefore needs to be a learning process. Together, through creative thinking and innovative action, we can learn what works and what doesn't and navigate our way to a sustainable future.
The Council, business and community organisations, and residents have a shared responsibility for this journey of learning for sustainability.
The Council has identified eleven sustainability themes to help ensure that in every area of responsibility we are encouraged to ask the necessary sustainability questions.
These themes are listed as links to the right. By following these links you will be able to discover some of the work that the Council is engaged in to make our Borough more sustainable.

The Council recognises that the status-quo is not an option and that inaction will undermine its ability to serve the Borough. The Council is therefore committed to facilitating and supporting the Borough's journey of learning for sustainability through the adopted LfS Strategy 2008 - 2014 (pdf 343KB).
The Council has set up the LfS Partnership Website to link to advice and support from within the Council, from our local partners and from across the country. The Council hopes that this website will help the Borough to work collaboratively as we set out on this journey together. The website can be accessed via the link to the right.
Finally, this is all very much 'a work in progress'. Please do contact us via ecolfs@rbwm.gov.uk if you have any suggestions or would like to discuss the possibility of becoming a Learning for Sustainability Partner.
